COACHING CORNER

Just as it is important for children to develop their resilience and positive mental health, it is vital that the adults who support them are also empowered to do the same. Coaching is a way of supporting both school staff and parents to feel listened to, to be given space and time to reflect on their lives as educators and parents, to problem-solve ways in which to support their children and themselves, and to be able to improve their own wellbeing and ability to cope. This is ever more vital in today's constantly changing and demanding world.

I have been supporting school staff and parents through coaching for a number of years now using psychological knowledge combined with practical coaching techniques, embedded into a solution-focused framework where recognising strengths and successes is key. The positive gains from a coaching approach will support adults to achieve goals, cope with changes, manage stress, and build strong and connected relationships with those around them. And since adults are role-models, this will lead to positive changes in the children that they support, further increasing their resilience and wellbeing -  a positive cycle that will have lasting effects on both home and school life.

POSITIVE CONNECTIONS

The foundation to positive relationships and resilience are the connections that children make at an early age. Find opportunities to connect with your children through play, daily chats, and quality time together.

SELF-AWARENESS

Be aware of how you are feeling and how this is affecting your words and actions; children will pick up on your emotions and how you cope with them, and will be affected by what you do, whether this is positive or negative.

SELF-CARE

As they say on planes, place your own oxygen mask on before you help others. You must take care of yourself first in order to really help someone else; if not, you'll run out of steam and won't have anything left to give.

TUNE IN

Become aware of the things that lift you up and make you feel energised and happy, and tune your focus in to these more often, such as spending time with family, being kind to others, playing with pets, walking, building something, writing, etc.

COACHING TESTIMONIALS

It has been invaluable being coached by Susana. She has helped me to see how my own parenting has affected the way I parent my son and she has worked with me to recognise what I already do well as a Mum and at work; it's actually helped me to look at my work-life balance and change what I've been doing for so long - and my relationship with my son has become so much stronger.

STRENGTHS SEARCH

Acknowledging your strengths allows you to see what you are good at and how these strengths have already helped you to overcome many obstacles, as well as achieve various steps along the way.

ENERGY SHIFT

Check how much energy you are wasting by engaging in negative thoughts, words, and behaviour that does not serve you. Focusing on the negative creates more of it, so shifting your energy to the positives will wield lasting benefits.

TRULY LISTEN

Listen with your head and your heart; focus on what you can hear but also on what the other person is trying to tell you without saying it out loud. Listen with purpose; no distractions and no interruptions or you might miss something important .
